Veselé Vánoce

My first Christmas in Sweden was spent in Gothenburg and was fun and relaxing. We went to visit Bjorn's mom Margaretha, her Bjorn, and Tove. Margaretha's Bjorn has two daughter's and two granddaughters, Beata and Hillavye, who were all there with us. It was nice to have kids around during Christmas, they make everything more interesting because they stay so excited about every part of the holiday.

In Sweden they open presents on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas day, so we needed a Santa Claus stand-in for the little girls. My husband got that privilege:)

It was a little improvised so he didn't have the red suit, but he had a big red sack to make it more authentic. He pulled out presents from the sack and handed them out to us- and the little girls didn't doubt for a minute that he was the real thing.

Margaretha and her Bjorn made a feast for all of us on Christmas Eve, and I loved getting to spend time with them and Tove.

The day after Christmas is Bjorn's birthday...his 33rd birthday, to be exact. He's quite an old man these days:)

Overall, I had a great Christmas in Gothenburg, even if my American family was very missed. I might have forgotten one thing though... Bjorn got me a Christmas present that was in a little metal box. When I opened it there was a slip of paper that said, "Check your email." So I checked it on my phone and saw that he had ordered us tickets to see Coldplay....in PRAGUE!

Needless to say, I was freaking out a little bit. I love Prague, and have wanted to go there with Bjorn, so it's hard to believe it's actually going to happen. It's a little while away, not until next September, but I can't wait.

So that would explain the title of the post- "Veselé Vánoce" means Merry Christmas...in Czech:)

Hope your week has been good, Whiggle! Miss you.

A few of my favorite things.

Sometimes there are just no excuses for taking such an inexplicably long time to reply to your posts. Unless, of course, you were willing to count several international flights, my first case of pneumonia, and a trip that left me computerless for almost a month as excuses? Ha, just kidding. I just knew the blog was in very good hands while I was away:)

Life in Sweden is pretty much back to normal now that the jet lag has nearly worn off. For reasons I cannot explain, I wake up at 3 or 4 am sharp every night since getting back. It wouldn't be a big deal if I could just go back to sleep, but I lie there wide awake for hours. Which has prompted me to take a sleeping pill when I wake up that helps me to sleep through my alarm the next morning. It's a vicious cycle, really. But you know I love my sleep.

I was thinking about what to call this post so I started looking through pictures from my time at home to help me decide. What I thought was that I was looking at all my favorite things. Most are actually people instead of things, but you know what I mean. Things that I love, and that make me feel loved.

So in honor of your Thanksgiving list, I made a list of my own.

#1. The family Christmas tree.

Every year we get out what feels like 25 boxes of ornaments and a mile and a half of tree lights to decorate the Christmas tree. To the sighs of (mostly male) members of the family, we spend hours turning a normal looking tree into a collection of every ornament we've had since the year we were born. And with 5 kids, it adds up. What I realized, this year more than most, is that I love it. That until that tree is sitting there in all of it's Christmas glory it just doesn't feel like Christmas. We have a smaller version now in Sweden, and it's made the holiday feel much more festive. And it reminds me of home.

#2. The dogs.

I know I'm biased, but I truly think these are the cutest dogs in the world. It didn't matter what kind of day I was having, when I saw them it made me smile. Especially Rudy, whose ears are so disproportionately big to his small body. Then Max, who thinks he's Rudy size when he climbs on the couch to sit in your lap. And Sadie, who loves to just sit with you or be held. They can make anyone feel loved, just by wagging their tails.

Max and his duck.

Rudy and his bone.

Sweet Sadie

#3. My brothers and sisters.

It's chaos, really, to have 4 other brothers and sisters. The simplest of trips can turn into a several hour ordeal. Speaking over everyone in the house requires some form of shouting, since we're all talking at once.  And we can fight. To the point where my very Swedish husband has to take "breaks" from the mania, and seclude himself in a quite room to get some peace. But I love every one of you. How unique every one of us is, different in so many ways. And how at the end of the day, we're stuck with each other, like it or not. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Same goes for you, Nicole. Welcome to the madness:)

#4. Mama

If ever there was someone to make me feel loved when I needed it, it's her. Growing up, she called me "her baby", she says because she was the only one who could get me to sleep as a newborn. I say that name is still fitting today. Through pain and sickness, hospitals and nursing homes, and the death of a son, this last year has been a struggle to keep going. But she does. And then, in spite of it all, she says something to make you laugh, just for good measure.

#5. My husband.

Who would have thought a quiet Swede I met on the steps of a church in Italy is the man I would be married to today? Sometimes I think about the improbability of it all, and then how very lucky I feel that he's mine. Through everything that's happened in the last year and a half, no matter how stressful it's been, he's been there. Calm and patient as ever. Yep, he's definitely my favorite.

#6. My parents.

After getting to spend an entire month with them, I wasn't sure if I could leave. Not after I was used to just meeting my Dad for lunch and seeing him after work. And spending all day with my Mom. Or when I could just call them whenever I wanted to. Things I took for granted before I lived on a different continent take on a new meaning these days. But as hard as it was to leave, I remember thinking how thankful I am for parents who I long to spend more time with.Who make me feel loved always. Everyone should be so lucky to have parents like that.

All in scrubs after watching a delivery!

Dad and Sadie.

Mom and her dog/eternal toddler, Rudy.

#7. You.

Yes, Whiggle, I had to make a special category for you. Because of how, in the best way, you're so uniquely yourself. You're empathetic, compassionate, sensitive, driven, artistic, and thoughtful. One of the most thoughtful people I've ever met. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've found a totally unexpected card from you that's encouraged me. And you're funny. Really, really funny. I've laughed harder with you than just about anyone.

 {Don't hate me.}

The beautiful painting you made for us.

Saying goodbye.

You are all my favorites, and now you know why.

I hope this Christmas away from home has been fun for you, it has for me, even if I miss you all. But there's always next year. Then Mom will have us all in matching pajamas sitting on the stairs Christmas morning. Something to look forward too:)

Love you.

3 years means a lot of food.

Al....I can't believe Sam and I have been married for 3 years. Time is really flying by, but this year has been a really great one. Not to say that it hasn't had its difficulties, but everyday I'm so thankful the Lord has given much such a loving husband. That life-changing day when he completely surprised me with an engagement ring....it's still fresh on my mind. (i'm still surprised that no one called the police, because I was screaming at the top of my lungs, hyperventilating.)

The night we got engaged back in 2008.
You know you and Bjorn took this picture at Pita -Pit the night we got engaged. Looking back , I'm so glad you guys were there to celebrate with us (even though it took you so long to notice my ring, that I had to tell you.)

This year, we kept it simple (like last year) and had a great dinner at a new restaurant in Birmingham called ORE. It's a restaurant opened by Taylor Hicks, the 2006 American Idol winner.  I loved the interior. A good mixture of modern and rustic. Hopefully we'll have a chance to go back again, because I wasn't as hungry as I wished I had been. Here's why:

Oh. yes....My sweet boss took our office to Ruth's Chris for our Christmas Lunch last Friday. It was fabulous. So between the sizzling steak I had for my entree and the gigantic chocolate mouse cake (pictured below) I had for dessert, and all the other sides in between....Let's just say our anniversary dinner fell on the wrong night. But oh well. It was still a lot of fun.

Jeff, Me, Danny (aka, the guy who answers all my questions. He is awesome.)
As if the lunch wasn't enough of a gift for all us, at the end of the meal, Andy, my boss, stands up and says a few kind words about our hard work, and then pulls out some pretty boxes. I was a little confused, and then out of nowhere I hear the word "iPad2." I may or may not have squealed like a 3 year old seeing Santa Claus for the first time at the mall. (I was actually a little embarrassed of myself, but I am rarely ever surprised by things, and had no idea we were getting an iPad.)

After our initial shock, we were all really excited to have a new little toy.  I was later told by my boss' wife that just seeing my expression was worth getting these ipads for everyone:) awesome.

my boss Andy, and his wife Linda

So....our anniversary was slammed packed full of great food and great people. Al, I'm so glad you and your painting made it back safely in one piece:)  We miss you guys already and hope you have a great Christmas with Bjorn's family in Gothenburg. Looking forward to some pictures of snowy weather, because you know it's like 65-70 degrees here.

love you,

Whit

An Iron Bowl Weekend

Since we had an early Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, we had some time later in the week to take advantage of a little more time with Allie and the family before everyone had to head in 20 different directions. I think one of the biggest blessings that comes from you living in Sweden, Al, is that I cherish the times we all are together so much more. I'm sure that comes with age and maturity, but knowing that we only have a few weeks together until the next holiday rolls around, makes me appreciate just being at home together. Even though it can get a little crazy....

we are never left without entertainment.

and are continually reminded to count our blessings:

and take time to do simple things together.

we found our guys playing football

Bjorn had to fly back to Stockholm late Saturday night from Atlanta, so we decided to pack up and go see the Browns. They were so gracious to let our crew invade their lovely home for a night:) Normally we just rotate holidays, so this was the first year we were able to see both families at Thanksgiving.

Sam, Logan, Jon (wishing he had that much hair.)
We were also able to visit with our friends Eric and Megan DeJesus and their super friendly, highly intelligent Golden, Bo.

My parents were able to get a glimpse into life with a 2 year old again. Our nephew, Parker, is growing up so fast and is still one of the happiest toddlers I know. (Jon and Melissa have done such a great job.)

He is all about Curious George and Elmo.

And only sits still for very small portions of time or while eating food.

He loves being tossed around, plays really hard, and sometimes passes out in his highchair, he's so tired.

Parker loves his Great-Grandparents, Mrs. Nancy and Granddad.

And his grandparents, Lynette and Mark. Happy 34th Anniversary to you guys!

Our time in Atlanta was a great end to wonderful week. Bjorn made it back safely and Allie changed her flight to stay until next week!  Thanks again to my wonderful in-laws for being so flexible, and my parents for making the short trip up to see us. You guys really are awesome.
